A variety of eye drops are available on the market for temporary dry eye relief these days. There are preservative and non-preservative varieties. Preservatives such as Purite and Polyquad seen in Refresh and Systane artificial tears are meant to prevent bacterial contamination of the fluid. While there are benefits to preservatives, they can cause eye irritation and discomfort. The non-preservative variety of artificial tears is a better solution for temporary dry eye relief, however the barrier is a higher price tag and the way in which they are sold. Preservative free artificial tears are usually sold in vials (as depicted in the picture below). These vials are only meant for 24 hour usage, due to the lack of preservative and as such, must be discarded each day no matter how many drops are used in each vial.
